The College of Education was established within Brigham Young University when the university reorganized in 1921, and continued in operation until it was established as the David O. McKay School of Education in 1997. It was previously known as the School of Education. Between 1921 and 1997, the acting deans and deans of the College of Education were as follows: John C. Swenson (1921-1924), L. John Nuttall (1924-1930), Amos N. Merrill (1930-1946), Reuben D. Law (1946-1955), Asahel D. Woodruff (1955-1961), A. John Clarke (1961-1962), Antone K. Romney (1962-1970), Stephen L. Alley (1970-1974), Curtis N. Van Alfen (1974-1985), Ralph B. Smith (1985-1989), Dan W. Andersen (1989-1993), Robert S. Patterson (1993-1996).

Functions

The College of Education was originally organized to qualify students to be supervisors, elementary teachers, high school instructors, or high school principals under the Church and State school systems. Towards the end of its operation, the College of Education outlined its four main purposes: (1) Preparing teachers for public and private schools. (2) Providing graduate programs for the preparation of school principals, counselors, school psychologists, curriculum supervisors, speech/language pathologists, clinical audiologists, and master teachers. (3) Offering research-based graduate programs. (4) Researching educational processes and issues.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The College of Education was the administering body for many different departments during its years of operation: Elementary Teaching, Elementary Education, Educational Sociology, Philosophy of Education, Educational Administration, Secondary Teaching, Secondary Education, Vocational Education, Religious Education, Physical Education, Philosophy of Education and Guidance, Education, Library Science, Personnel and Guidance, Philosophy and History of Education, Educational Values and Programs, Educational Philosophy and Programs, Instruction, Educational Research and Services, Teacher Education, Graduate Department of Education, Department of Education, Secondary Education and Foundations, Educational Psychology, Instructional Science, Secondary and Higher Education, Curriculum and Instructional Science, Educational Leadership, and Health, Physical Education and Recreation. From 1922 to 1946, the College also awarded degrees in Psychology, although the Department of Psychology was administered by the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to the departments, the College of Education also maintained the Training Schools and the Laboratory Schools, which included Brigham Young High School, until they discontinued their operation in 1968. The college was administered by a dean under the direction of the president of the university.
