Brigham Young University. College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences, previously known as the School of Arts and Sciences, was established within Brigham Young University in 1921. In 1925, some of its departments were transferred into the newly-established College of Fine Arts. The College of Arts and Sciences continued in operation until 1954 when it split into three separate colleges: the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences, and the College of Biological and Agricultural Sciences. Between 1921 and 1954 the deans of the college were Martin P. Henderson (1921-1924), Carl F. Eyring (1925-1951), and George H. Hansen (acting dean, 1951-1954).

Functions

The College of Arts and Sciences was organized to provide a broad and liberal education to enable students to succeed in a complex civilization. The college also provided specialized studies in engineering, medicine, law, religion, politics, and social leadership.

Assets and Administrative Structure

During its years of operation, the College of Arts and Sciences was the administering body for the following departments and divisions: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Sociology, English, Theology, Religious Education, Modern Languages and Latin, History, Mathematics, Political Science, Physics, Psychology, Public Speaking, Agriculture, Business Administration, Financing and Banking, Home Economics, Mechanic Arts, Music, Physical Education, Geology and Geography, Modern Languages and Latin, Botany, Zoology and Entomology, Modern and Classical Languages, Rural and Social Economics, Bacteriology, Journalism, Archaeology, Air Science, Engineering Sciences. The College was divided into the following divisions for registration purposes only: Biological Science Division, Physical Science Division, Social Science Division, Language Division, and the General Course Division. The college was administered by a dean under the direction of the president of the university.
