The Department of Archaeology was established in 1946 as part of the College of Arts and Sciences. The department was transferred in 1954 to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. It was previously in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department chairs included M. Wells Jakeman (1947-1960) and Ross T. Christensen (1960-1965).

Functions

To provide courses which will help students prepare for postgraduate specialization in either 1) Old World archaeology and ancient history or 2) American archaeology and anthropology, leading or teaching and/or research and writing in these areas. The department was considered to have a parallel mission of serving as a center of research and publishing on historic archaeology of the scriptures.
