Brigham Young University. Dept. of Physical Education (1920-1942)

The Dept. of Physical Education was established in 1920 as part of the School of Arts and Sciences. The department was created to educate the students for wholesome and efficient living. To do this the department taught students how to establish correct motor habits and to conserve their health and vitality. In 1921 the department was transferred to the newly established College of Arts and Sciences. The department's functions remained the largely the same, with the addition of new education courses for training future instructors. In 1932 the department was transferred again, to the College of Education. Teaching areas of the department continued to expand until the department was reorganized in 1946 as the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. Department chairs of Physical Education included Eugene L. Roberts (1920-1928), Charles J. Hart (1929), G. Ott Romney (1930-1936) and Charles J. Hart (1937-1946). In 1937, Leona Holbrook became the direction of physical education for women.

Functions

The Dept. of Physical Education was originally responsible for teaching the students courses in physical education. The courses consisted of exercise, hygiene, gymnastics, dancing, coaching, and teaching. Courses were later expanded to include football, wrestling, boxing, baseball, basketball, track, tennis, fencing, health education. Dance offerings were also diversified over time to include clogging, folk dance, and natural dance.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The department was administered by a department chair under the direction of the college dean. Between 1920 and 1921 the department was under the direction of the School of Arts and Sciences. Between 1921 and 1932 it was under the direction of the College of Arts and Sciences, and was then administered by the College of Education between 1932 and 1946.
