Brigham Young University. College of Physical Education

After its establishment in 1960, the College of Physical Education quickly made phenomenal strides regarding modern physical facilities and academic enrollment. The George Albert Smith Fieldhouse, completed in 1951, was of exceptional quality for similar buildings of its time. The college was renamed the College of Health and Human Performance in 1998. The following individuals served as supervisors or deans: Milton F. Hartvigsen (1960-1975), Clayne R. Jensen (1975-1991), Della M. Brown (1991-1992), Elmo S. Roundy (1992-1995), and Robert K. Conlee (1995-1998).

Functions

The College of Physical Education was unique in American universities at the time of its establishment. Main focuses in this college were contributions of service and development of leadership. In addition to the departments under the college, the areas of Dance, Intramural Sports, and Pre-Physical Therapy were important. Activities such as football, swimming, dance, tumbling, basketball, gymnastics, softball, skiing, and field sports were offered.
