Description

Functions

Extramural sports were designed to allow top athletes an opportunity to compete with athletes from other universities in sports not contained in the intercollegiate athletic program. Men's teams included skiing, soccer, and rugby, while women's teams included field hockey, volleyball, and track and field. Recently, Brigham Young University offers four sports for men, soccer, racquetball, lacrosse, rugby; and one sport for women, racquetball. Many of the extramural teams have ranked nationally over the years.

Intramural sports was a program composed of more than seventy-five events, involving thousands of men and women in varying activities. The aim of intramural play is to give opportunities for participation and for recognition, leadership, and fellowship. Involvement is deemed as more important than winning. More recently, there are over thirty events offered by the intramural activities program with participants of varying skill levels.
