Brigham Young University. Dept. of Recreation Management and Youth Leadership

The Department of Recreation Management and Youth Leadership, previously separate departments, was organized in 1981. It contained essentially the same goals as the departments from which it was created. The following individuals have served as chairmen: Jay H. Naylor (1981-1987), Howard R. Gray (1987-1984), S. Harold Smith (1994-1999), Thomas S. Catherall (1999-2001), Brian J. Hill (2001-2007), and Patti Freeman (2008-2009).

Functions

The Department of Recreation Management and Youth Leadership functioned to prepare students to professionally assist and direct programs outlined to fill needs of individuals, families and other groups. Students were prepared to work in a variety of employment settings, including youth agencies, hospitals and nursing homes, and government agencies. Courses offered included Primitive Land Survival, Recreation Facility Planning, and Camp Aquatics.
