The College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences, previously the College of Family Living and the College of Social Sciences, was established in 1981 within Brigham Young University. Since 1981, the college has had the following deans: Martin B. Hickman (1981-1986), Stan L. Albrecht (1986-1989), Donovan E. Fleming (1989-1993), Clayne L. Pope (1993-2001), David B. Magleby (2001-2011), Benjamin M. Ogles (2011-2021), and Laura Padilla-Walker (2021- ).

Functions

The College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences was originally organized with an emphasis on broad education the helps students appreciate values found in a complex society while contributing effectively to those values. In addition, the college seeks to prepare professionals who can discover additional truths of the past to enable us to better understand and serve individuals, families, and institutions.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences has been the administering body for the following departments and schools: American Heritage, Anthropology, Child Development and Family Relationships, Clothing and Textiles, Economics, Geography, Government, History, Home and Family Development, Home Economics Education, Home Economics, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Family Sciences, Political Science, School of Family Life. The college has also been the administering body for the following centers, institutes, and programs: Charles Redd Center for Western Studies, Center for Family and Community History, Comprehensive Clinic, Center for International and Area Studies, David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, Family Resource Management, the RELATE Institute, Family Living Center, Family Studies Program, Neuroscience Center, Family and Demographic Research Institute, and Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Church History. The college is administered by a dean and associate deans under the direction of the university president.
