The Department of Home Economics was established in 1920 under the School of Arts and Sciences. Department chairmen include: Ethel Culture (1920-1923), Vilate Elliott (1929), Effie Warnick (1930-1935), Margaret Swenson (1936), Effie Warnick (1937-1947), Christen Jensen (1948), and Irene S. Barlow (1949-1955).

Functions
The Department of Home Economics included three areas of study: domestic science, household administration, and the domestic arts. Courses included cookery, foods, institutional cookery, nutrition, dietetics, home care of the sick, child care, home management problems, clothing, textiles, sewing, advanced dress making, and millinery.
