The Institute of Business Management became part of the Marriott School of Management at the time of its organization in 1988. In 1997 the institute was renamed the Department of Business Management. Directors included Robert H. Daines (1989-1990), Scott M. Smith (1990-1994), Heikki J. Rinne (1994-1996), and Ned C. Hill (1996-1997).

The Institute of Business Management provided degree programs in general business, finance, marketing, operations and system analysis, and retailing. Students were required to apply for admittance into the institute program. Courses included: personal finance, introduction to investments, introduction to marketing, introduction to retailing, financial management, marketing management, retailing management, operations management, management of financial institutions, risk management, investment, real estate administration, financial and estate planning, introduction to international business, international marketing, international corporate finance, international management, marketing research, buying behavior and marketing decisions, industrial marketing and procurement, market analysis and forecasting, product and brand management, sales and distribution management, promotion management, problems in marketing analysis, new enterprise management, the social and cultural environment of business enterprise, and business policy.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The Institute of Business Management was administered by an institute director under the direction of the school dean. The institute was also closely associated with the Institute of Retail Management.
