Brigham Young University. Staff Personnel Committee

The Personnel Committee was created in April 1960. Members consisted of the Administrative staff of the University. Its purpose was to be an advisory committee to consider matters and problems which affect salary or policy with respect to staff personnel matters. They clarified personnel policies, established policies (like wage minimums, salaries, holidays, and hiring women), reviewed requests for new positions, considered changes of personnel classification, handled requests for leaves of absence, dealt with salary change recommendations, and submitted new ideas of policy to the President's Office. Its known chairmen included B. Keith Duffin, director of the Placement Bureau; Ben E. Lewis; and Robert J. Smith. Its first members were Ben E Lewis, Sam F Brewster, John T Bernhard, and Joseph T Bentley.

Functions

The functions of the Personnel Committee was to make recommendations on wages and salaries as well as personnel policies for employees of the University. They helped plan for and administered the programs for staff and students. They likewise reviewed the recommendations of the Retirement and Benefits Committees.

The members of this committee were appointed by and responsible to the University President. Members rotated. During the 1980's the Financial Vice President of the University served as chairman of this committee.
