Functions

The Photo Studio, also known as the Portrait Studio, was a commercial photo studio on the campus of Brigham Young University. It was originally created in order to provide faculty and student pictures for the university yearbook, the Banyan. Once it was officially incorporated into the University under Auxiliary Services, its services increased to include any photography order from students, instructional departments, or administrative officials. At times it worked with the News Bureau and often photographed sporting and public events on campus. Beginning in 1965, the Photo Studio became the only place on campus any photographic work could be commissioned. It then facilitated any academic or instructional photographic or graphic work, including silk-screening, aerial photography, and departmental portraits. In 1972, the Instructional Services Division created Instructional Photo/Graphics which facilitated all instructional and academic photographic work. The Photo Studio was then responsible only as a commercial entity for commissioned work on campus.

Assets and Administrative Structure

From its inception until 1954, the Photo Studio had no formal organization within the University except for its management by a director. In 1954, the Photo Studio was placed under the authority of the director of Auxiliary Services. In 1960, Auxiliary Services became a Vice-Presidency and the Photo Studio's director reported to the Vice-President of Auxiliary Services. In 1965, the Photo Studio was placed under the authority of the director of Communication Services. In 1979, the Photo Studio was reorganized and reported to the manager of Instructional Photo/Graphics as a sub-unit of that department. After 1975, the Photo Studio was placed under the Dean of Student Life.
