Brigham Young University. Dept. of Scouting

The Department of Scouting was established in 1955 and placed under the College of Recreation, Physical and Health Science, and Athletics. Between 1955 and 1956 no chairmen were listed. In 1956 the department was renamed the Department of Scouting Education.

Functions

The purpose of the Department of Scouting Education was to prepare professional scout leaders and to assist in the training of volunteer leaders in various wards and communities. The department would offer long-term and short-term courses on campus and also provide pre-service and in-service courses off campus for scoutmasters and volunteers. The department was created to meet the demand for scouting leadership as long as this need existed.
