Brigham Young University. Athletics Council

In 1905 the Lectures, Social Affairs, and Athletics Committee was divided into the Lectures and Social Affairs Committee and the Athletics Council. The council assisted in planning and scheduling intercollegiate athletic events and overseeing athletic facilities at the university, working with the Director of Athletics. Chairmen of the Athletics Council include Alfred Osmond (1905-1910, 1918-1920), E. L. Roberts (1910-1914, 1922-1928), Harvey Fletcher (1914-1916), L. H. Peterson (1916-1918), C. H. Carroll (1920-1922), H. R. Merrill (1928-1929), P. A. Christensen (1929-1939), H. Grant Ivins (1939-1943), A. S. Ballif (1943-1952), and Wayne B. Hales (1952-1956). In August 1956, the Athletics Council voted to change their name to the Athletic Advisory Council, in order to better represent their function.

Functions

The Athletics Council both advised and directed the operation of the Intercollegiate Athletic Program at BYU. They oversaw University conference affiliation, athletic facilities, team schedules, publicity, and other concerns associated with the athletics program of BYU. Many of the suggestions for improvement came from faculty, students, and the general public. The council had the primary goal to promote the university's reputation of good sportsmanship while maintaining high academic standards and high standards of personal behavior as outlined in the honor code.

Assets and Administrative Structure

An appointed chairman oversaw the Athletics Council. As a body, the Athletic Committee made recommendations to the Dean of College of Recreation, Physical and Health Education and Athletics, and to the President regarding inter-collegiate athletics.
