Currently unclear when the BYU Police Dept. came under the direction of Student Life. Catalogs do not show hierarchy, and University Police predate the establishment of Student Life. Prior to the 1997 catalog Student Life was listed hierarchically, with University Police outside of their hierarchy, but even this is unclear.
