Brigham Young University. University Police

In 1982, the Brigham Young University Security/Police department was renamed the BYU University Police. This department's primary functions are to protect students, faculty, and staff of the university and to provide enforcement of laws, rules, and regulations. This department was initially administered by Robert W. Kelshaw (1983-2000), and then Larry A. Stott (2000-2018 ). Chris Autry now serves as police chief (2018- ). In 1997, the BYU University Police became a department of Brigham Young University Student Life and it has been since.

Functions

The purpose of the BYU Police Department is to protect students. Officers are state-certified and were originally asked to enforce laws and campus rules and regulations, including rules regarding the registration of vehicles and regarding parking permits. In 1991, non-certified officers are tasked with enforcing campus rules and regulations, while certified officers were to primarily concentrate on enforcing appropriate laws. In 2001, this division was made stronger, with certified officers only working in law enforcement.

The Brigham Young University Police Department is a part of BYU Student Life. The Parking Services Office is a part of BYU Police. The administrator of the Police Department is the Chief of Police and his supervisor is the Vice President of Student Life.
