The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies was categorized in the "Research Center and Institutes" section of the university catalog and was affiliated with the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences in 1982. The Directors were Thomas G. Alexander (1983-1989).

Functions
To promote the study of all aspects of the American West. Programs of the center include conducting research on the American West, publishing a monograph series, sponsoring lectures and symposia, conducting an oral history program, assisting professional and student research through grants and fellowships, providing consultation services on oral history, and assisting high school students through the Utah History Fair. Center personnel also teach classes in academic departments on campus.
Assets and Administrative Structure
The Charles Redd Center for Western Studies originally established in 1972 under an endowment from Charles Redd, a prominent Utah stockman and philanthropist. Also endowed was the Lemuel Hardison Redd, Jr., Chair of Western History. Subsequent gifts from the Redd family and others have strengthened the endowment of the Chair and provided additional support for Center programs. The Center is closely affiliated with the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences and is lead by a Director.
