Student Health Services was created in 1948 with the organization of Special Services to address the medical needs of students on campus. Prior to Student Health Services, medical services were administered by a medical director and nurse. Medical care was limited. Student Health Services was absorbed into the Howard S. McDonald Student Health Center in 1957. Medical directors included: Seth E. Smoot (1948-1950), Carlos N. Madsen (1950-1951), John R. Bourne (1951-1953), Ariel L. Williams, M.D. (1953-1957).

Functions

Student Health Services administered physical examinations (required for admission to the University), follow-up examinations, health guidance, care of minor illnesses and injuries of ambulatory nature, as well as ascertaining whether or not hospitalization was necessary.

Assets and Administrative Structure

Student Health Services was run by the University's physician. The physician reported to the director of Special Services, as well as to the chairman of the Health Services Committee.
