The School of Arts and Trades was established in 1906 within Brigham Young University when the School of Arts and Industries divided into the School of Arts and Trades and the School of Agriculture. When Brigham Young University reorganized in 1909, the School of Arts and Trades merged into the Brigham Young High School.

The purpose of the school was to provide an environment of opportunity for Western industrial pursuits, to develop individual character, and cultivate a sense of refinement through well-adapted courses.

The School of Arts and Trades was under the direction of the president of the university. Between 1906 and 1909 the School of Arts and Trades was the administering body for the following departments: Art, Trades, Household Economics, and Commercial Painting and Decoration.
