The School of Arts and Industries was established in 1904 within Brigham Young University and later divided into the School of Arts and Trades and the School of Agriculture in 1906.

Functions

Between 1904 and 1906, the School of Arts and Industries was organized to promote art and industry. The purpose of the school was to provide an environment to foster industrial thought, power of character and individual development.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The School of Arts and Industries was directed by Elbert H. Eastmond, Principal, under the direction of the president of the university. Between 1904 and 1906 the School of Arts and Industries was the administrative body for the following departments: Trades, Agriculture, Household Economics, Fine Art and Design, Art and Manual Training, Art, Industries, and Normal Manual Training. Beginning in 1905, the School of Arts and Industries also offered courses in Nursing and Obstetrics. Courses in Nursing and Obstetrics within the School of Arts and Industries were under the direction of Frederic Cliff, M.D.
