The Museum of Art officially opened in 1993. It is one of the highest attended art museums in the Mountain West and has over 16,500 permanent items in its collection. The building was designed by Los Angeles architect James Langeheim. Museum directors have included James Mason (1993-1996) and Campbell Gray (1996-).

The Museum of Art showcases the various permanent and traveling collections that Brigham Young University has received through private donations over the past 100 years. The Museum serves as a place of research, study, and instruction, as well as recreation.
