The Department of Recreation was made part of the College of Physical Education at its establishment in 1960. Many courses in this department were taken by students on an elective basis or as intramural activities, an undertaking which was strongly encouraged. In 1979 the department changed its name to the Department of Recreation Management. Israel C. Heaton (1960-1970) and William Hafen (1970-1979) served as chairmen.
