The Department of Physical Education was created in 1993 when the Departments of Physical Education Sports and Dance were combined. The mission of the Department of Physical Education reflects the mission of the university, in that the department encourages understanding and advancement of the body and mind, seeks to promote the truth that "the human body is sacred, the veritable tabernacle of the divine spirit," and looks to establish stimulating experiences and skills that cultivate a happy and healthy lifestyle. Robert K. Conlee (1993-1995), Earlene Durrant (1995-2001) and Ruel M. Barker (2001-2005) served as chairmen.
