In 1942, the Department of Physical Education expanded its name to clarify the scope of its expanding course offerings. Still under the College of Education, it became the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. Health coursework included hygiene, nutrition, bacteriology, public health, first aid, and health education for teachers. Physical Education offerings included various sports, elementary physical education, various dance classes, coaching, and physical education for elementary teachers. Recreation courses included social dancing, crafts, hiking, horseback riding, and recreational leadership. Then in 1955, the department split from the College of Education and became the College of Recreation, Physical and Health Education, and Athletics.
