The Department of Engineering Sciences was established in 1952 within the College of Arts and Sciences. Harvey Fletcher was the Department Chairman from 1953 to 1955 and Jens J. Jonsson was Department Chairman from 1955 to 1957. The Department of Engineering Sciences remained as such until the 1957-1958 academic year when it was divided into five different departments, namely: Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Science; Civil Engineering Science; Geology and Geological Engineering Science; and Mechanical Engineering.
