The Department of Engineering Sciences was established in 1952 within the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1954, after the dissolution of the College of Arts and Sciences, it was place in the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences. Harvey Fletcher was the Department Chairman from 1953 to 1955 and Jens J. Jonsson was Department Chairman from 1955 to 1957. In the 1957-1958 academic year, the department was split into five different departments.
