The Department of Civil Engineering was previously known as the Department of Civil Engineering Science. It is still part of the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology. In 1978 the name of the department was changed from Civil Engineering Science to Civil Engineering. The Department Chairs were James R. Barton (1977-1981), Henry N. Functions
To provide a broad training in all basic aspects of civil and structural engineering. Qualifications obtainable are applicable in such closely related technical fields as applied mechanics, architectural engineering, etc. Also to offer professional programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Ph.D. The curriculum is accredited by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD) as a professional engineering curriculum.
