The Academic Enrichment Council was created shortly after the start of Dallin H. Oaks' administration in 1972. Members of the Council were the heads of committees relating to various academic enrichment programs. Lorin F. Wheelwright (1972- ) served as the first chairman of this Council.

The Academic Enrichment Council met to exchange information and coordinate and suggest standards of performance for various academic enrichment programs.
Assets and Administrative Structure
The Academic Enrichment Council consisted of the chairmen of the Art and Acquisition and Display Committee, Lyceum Committee, Films Committee (later, the Films Policy and Review Committee), and Speakers Committee. These and other members of the Council were appointed by the University President and reported to the Academic and Executive Vice-Presidents.
