The Department of Guided Studies was organized when the Skills Improvement Service program changed it's name. The department worked with students who were admitted to the University on academic warning. Howard T. Reid (1966-1968) and Wayne R. Herlin (1968-1973) served as chairmen.

Functions
The Department of Guided Studies helped students establish aptitudes and abilities that will enable them to participate successfully at Brigham Young University. The program taught students to speak, read, think, study, and write more effectively. The courses offered included Remedial Spelling, Developmental Reading, and Effective Study and Adjustment to College.
