The Department of Government was established in 1979 in a renaming of the Department of Political Science. In 1981 the department was moved to the newly formed College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences. The department chair was F. LaMond Tullis (1981-1982). In 1982, the department became the Department of Political Science.

Functions
To provide curriculum in three majors: political science, public policy, and justice administration. These majors provide students with a broad liberal arts education and prepare them for graduate study, law school, public and business administration, and public service.
