The Honorary Degree Committee was created in 1967. During the 1960's, while the administration regarded it as a standing committee of the University it was viewed in the graduate school as a subcommittee of the Graduate Council. As such, while the University listed Wesley P. Lloyd (1967-1969) and Chauncey Riddle (1969-1971) as chairman of this committee, the Graduate Council recognized Marion Bennion (1967-1969) and John N. Cannon (1969-1971) as its chairman. From 1971-1980 University President Dallin H. Oaks served as chairman. He was followed by Neal E. Lambert (1980-1983).
