Brigham Young University. Graduate Council

Formerly the General Committee of the Graduate School, the Graduate Council was established in 1957. It has served as an administrative body for the Graduate School and interacts directly with faculty, staff, and students.

Functions

The Graduate Council is empowered to act for the graduate faculty on all student petitions and on departmental requests for approval of faculty members for graduate instruction and supervision. It is the responsibility of the graduate faculty to formulate and recommend requirements for all graduate degrees and to recommend regulations and facilities to promote the scholarly activities and research interests of graduate students.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The chief administrative body of the graduate faculty is the Graduate Council, which consists of (1) the president of the University, the dean of the Graduate School, and the director of research, ex-officio; (2) four members of the graduate faculty elected at large for terms of three years; (3) eight members of the graduate faculty, one elected from each of the eight colleges in which there are departments offering graduate work; and (4) one member elected to represent the Division of Religion.
