University Communications was established in 1997. Directors for University Communications included Carri P. Jenkins (1997-). Lee Bartlett served as an assistant vice-president to the University President from 1997-2000, after which Carri P. Jenkins took over that title as well.

Functions

University Communications acts as spokesperson for the university when dealing with any outside media outlet. University Communications also talks to anyone at the university who talks directly to outside media outlets. Functions within University Communications include web communications, media relations, broadcast media, university photography, and campus news management. Other functions include: the development and management of the development of positive and effective relationships with members of the local, state and national media; the handling of conflict and crisis situations that could or do result in media attention; ensuring that the administration hears and understands what essential public figures and the news media have to say about the university, as well as provide strategic planning for the administration and other university entities; the coordination media needs during major campus events; the consultation on editorial matters for University Publications; the handling of critical communication needs in the event of an emergency.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The director of University Communications report to the head of Advancement. The director also serves as an assistant vice-president and, thus, reports to the President of the University and the President's Council. There was a break from 2000-2006 where, following the retirement of Lee Bartlett, the assistant vice-president was not on the President's Council.
