David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies. African Studies Program

From 1987 to 1994, the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies offered an limited African Studies program. In 1998, the African Studies Program was created which offered students a minor in African Studies. No program coordinators were listed. In 2006 the program was placed under the direction of the Department of Anthropology.

Functions

The African Studies minor was designed to complement several majors, most prominent was the International studies major with one of its three emphases: development, global trade, or law and diplomacy. The minor also included a language competence feature in which students could choose between several languages including: French, Swahili, Afrikaans, or a combination of French/ Swahili, Afrikaans, and Portuguese. Other courses would focus on African history, and social sciences.
