The Department of University Studies was created in 1980 under the direction of the College of Humanities. Dennis F. Rasmussen served as department chairman from 1980 to 1984. Richard G. Ellsworth succeeded him as chairman and served from 1984 until the department was abolished in 1990.

Functions
The University Studies program was intended to provide an alternative to a normal major in that courses may be drawn from three or more academic areas rather than just one. Students were required to prove that their educational or career objectives could not be met by any other major.
