The Brigham Young University Department of Undergraduate Social Work was formed in 1968 as part of the College of Social Sciences under the direction of Dean John T. Bernhard. It sought to prepare students to work in a variety of social services settings. Directors included: John T. Bernhard (1968-1970) and Martin B. Hickman (1970-1980). In 1980, the Department of Undergraduate Social Work merged with Sociology within the College of Social Sciences.

Functions
The Department of Undergraduate Social Work sought to prepare students to work in a variety of social service agencies on a county, state, and federal level. The curriculum was focused to lead students to greater professionalization found in the training of graduate schools of social work and related disciplines.
