Brigham Young University. Dept. of Church History and Doctrine

The Department of Church History and Doctrine was part of the College of Religious Instruction from 1969 until the abolishment of the college in 1973. It has since existed under several colleges and institutions and functions under Religious Education today. The following individuals have served as chairmen: LaMar C. Berrett (1969-1975), Larry C. Porter (1975-1983), Keith W. Perkins (1983-1990), Larry E. Dahl (1990-1991), Leon R. Hartshorn (1991-1995), Richard O. Cowan (1995-1997), Raymond S. Wright (1997-2001), Paul H. Peterson (2001-2006), Arnold K. Garr (2006-2009), Brent Top (2009-2013), Richard E. Bennett (2013-2016), and Alexander L. Baugh (2016- ).

Courses taught in the department aim to give students a strong foundation in the history and doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Included are courses such as The Gospel in Principle and Practice, Genealogy and the LDS Family, and Schismatic Movements in Mormon History.
