Functions

The goal of the Women's Office was to effectively serve and represent the Women of BYU. Originally the office was established to give women a voice in student government. Eventually the number of male and female representatives was equal and this was no longer necessary. The office's function evolved from that of helping "a smaller voice to be heard," to its role of "enhancing and portraying a strong chorus of accomplishments." The office provided functions which benefited both women and men but maintained its focus on women and their achievements. A special emphasis was placed on education, political awareness, spiritual development, social and physical growth. As well as women's programs, the office supported Lamanite Week, Black Awareness WEek, and was constantly investigating new programs and opportunities. Through its variety of programs, the Women's Office strived to fulfill its ultimate purpose: to help women achieve their full potential. In order to develop their abilities, maximize their potential, and become well-rounded and informed, it offered programs in five areas: academic, social, cultural, service, and spiritual.
