Upon the completion of the J. Reuben Clark, Jr. Library Fall 1961, Special Collections was moved from the Heber J. Grant Building to the new edifice. In 1958, it was planned that Special Collections, the archives, reading room and a vault would be housed on the main (3rd) floor of the J. Reuben Clark, Jr. Library. The Special Collections Librarian was Chad J. Flake (1961-1973).

In 1973 the J. Reuben Clark, Jr. Library was renamed the Harold B. Lee Library, where Special Collections remained.

Functions

Items too valuable for ordinary circulation were housed in Special Collections. The main items were Mormon Americana which contained books by or about the LDS Church, Utah, and other Mormon subjects. Next, Special Collections contained rare materials which included books published before 1800, books valued at more than $50, and limited edition books printed in groups of 300 books or less. Lastly, Special Collections contained Subject Collections which were private libraries or collections that had been given to, or purchased by the library.

In 1965 the Library was designated the research library for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The University Library aimed to develop their collections in such a way as to facilitate this role.
