The University Archives were established in 1957 in the Maeser Building, records management was a part of the objective of the University Archives. In 1962 under the University Archives a Records Service was established for the preservation and destruction of relevant University materials. In 1973 the University Archives and Records Management Committee was formed under the direction of University President Dallin H. Oaks and Director of Libraries Daniel K. Nelson. In 1978 a Records Center was established as a part of the University Archives and Manuscripts department, but it functioned outside of the library in the Heber J. Grant Building. In 1990 University Archives merged with Records Management until 1996.

The University Archives and Records Management Committee focused on three major projects. First, the creation of a report and recommendations supporting the establishment of a full university records management service. Second, Revision of the university archives use policy. Third, establishing standards, policies and guidelines for the preservation and storage of university records on microfilm.
