The Social Sciences Department had one chair of the department, Marvin Wiggins, (1979-2004). In 1979-80, the Information Services Division consolidated Documents and Maps and Social Sciences into one department. In 1981-82, Documents and Maps and Social Sciences split into two departments again. In 1996-97, the Social Sciences Department expanded to include social sciences, history, anthropology, the Government Information Department, and the Tanner Management library between the years of 1996-97. Management/Economics, Government Information, and Social Science were bound together in the Social Sciences department in 1999-2000. When the History/Religion department was dissolved in May 1999, the History section was added to Social Sciences, while Religion went to Humanities and Arts.
