Library Automations and Systems was created in 1973 with the reorganization of the J. Reuben Clark, Jr., Library. Prior to this reorganization, the department existed as a program within the JRCL. Library Automations and Systems Dept. became Library Information Systems in 1994. Library Automations and Systems was chaired by John R. Taylor (1973-1987), Kal Larsen (1987-1992), Kayla Willey (1992-1994).

Description

Established: 1973

Abolished: 1994

Location: Provo, Utah (1973-1994)

Functions

Library Automations and Systems was originally created to organize and automate several large indexes in the archives, as well as the library serials. The dept. was involved with the Library Integration Network Center (LINC), Circulation Library Systems Integration (CLSI), the Online Serials System, Phonodisc Catalog, Integrated Library System (ILS), Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN), Serials Interface Network (SIN), and, most importantly, the NOTIS system.

In sum, Automations served to transition the library's research capabilities from manual to mechanized systems. Library holdings and acquisitions were organized and made more available to patrons; internal systems were put in place to facilitate comprehensive access to the entirety of the library's holdings for library administrators, subject librarians, and archivists. Automation initiated and facilitated Circulation Automation, Serials Automation, Records Management, Cataloging, and Order Dept., Learning Resource Centers (LRC) among others.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The dept. was under the direction of a chair until 1992 when the position was reclassified as a coordinator to the dept. The chair and coordinator reported to the Director of Libraries from 1973-1979. In 1979, Automations was placed within the Technical Services Division, under the Assistant Director of Libraries for Technical Services.
