In 1977 the Library created a new department called Conservation and Repair that included the book repair unit and conservation laboratory. The head Conservator was Craig Jensen (1977-1979).

Description

Established: 1977

Abolished: 1979

Location: Provo, Utah (1977-1979)

Functions

Library Conservation was established to help the Library's growing need to repair and conserve the materials both in the regular library stacks and in special collections. The Book Repair unit provided services for the materials in the regular library stacks, mostly re-covering books. The Conservation Laboratory restored rare and expensive library materials, mostly from special collections. The department's goal was to cut cost by not purchasing new books so often, as well as prolong the life of all library collections.

Assets and Administrative Structure

Library Conservation was run by the head Conservator who reported to the Acquisitions Department under the Assistant Director of Libraries for Collection Development. The assistant Director for Collection Development in turn, reported to the Director of Libraries. The offices were located in the Harold B. Lee Library.
