The Preservation Department was dissolved in 1997. The Conservation Laboratory was made into a separate Department, named the Conservation Department, and it was placed under The Special Collections Division. The Department Chair for Conservation is Mark Pollei (1997-).

Functions
The Conservation Department is dedicated to the preservation of the library materials that are rare and valuable. Library materials that are old or severely damaged are treated and preserved in the conservation laboratory, while library materials that are damaged or worn by normal library circulation are treated by the Book Repair unit in another department of the library. The Conservation Department is used for specialized materials and projects.
Assets and Administrative Structure
The Conservation Department is run by the department chair and he reports to the Assistant University Library (AUL) for Special Collections. The AUL for Special Collections reports to the University Librarian.
