The Conservation Department is dedicated to the preservation of the library materials that are rare and valuable. Library materials that are old or severely damaged are treated and preserved in the conservation laboratory, while library materials that are damaged or worn by normal library circulation are treated by the Book Repair unit in another department of the library. The Conservation Department is used for specialized materials and projects.

The Conservation Department is run by the department chair, he reports to the Assistant University Library for Special Collections, who reports to the University Librarian.
