Description

Established: 1973

Location: Provo, Utah (1973- )

Functions

The Harold B. Lee Library supports the academic and religious mission of Brigham Young University and its sponsor, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The library's mission is to acquire, organize, preserve, and make readily available collections of scholarly and related materials in all media; to assist patrons in finding and using information available at the University and elsewhere; and to encourage lifelong learning.

From 1981-1986 the University Librarian was responsible for the head of the library and campus Learning Resource Centers.

In 2004 the library administered the General Information Services unit, under which the Digital Multimedia Section, Distributed Learning Section, Information Commons/Reference Section, and Information Literacy Section of the Library were all combined. Within this unit also resided the Learning Resource Centers. This unit lasted until 2010 when the unit was merged with Periodicals and renamed Learning Commons.

Learning Commons included: creative learning rooms, the Writing Fellows Program, the writing lab, The Hub (Freshman Mentoring Space), an Accounting Lab, reference desks and services, multimedia labs and services, and periodicals.

Assets and Administrative Structure

Internally, the library is managed by the library director, who is aided by an associate university librarian and assistant university librarians, who oversee divisions of the library. Externally, the library was aligned with Media Services under the Assistant Academic Vice President of the University in 1973.
