David O. McKay School of Education. Center for the Improvement of Teacher Education and Schooling

The Center for the Improvement of Teacher Education and Schooling (CITES) was established in 1997 as a part of the David O. McKay School of Education. CITES aims to perpetuate the education of teachers in order to benefit students of public schools throughout Utah. Director include Robert S. Patterson (1997-2003), K. Richard Young (2003-2007), and Steven Baugh (2007-).

Functions

CITES seeks to continually educate teachers of public schools in order to improve children's education. The CITES programs offer elementary and secondary teachers the opportunity to certify as reading specialists. These programs also offer seven classes required by the Utah State Office of Education: foundations of Literacy, Content Area Literacy, Writing Instruction, Reading Comprehension Instruction, Children's or Young Adult Literature, and Literacy Assessment and Interventions.

The Center for the Improvement of Teacher Education and Schooling is administered by a director under the David O. McKay School of Education. It is also divided into three subgroups each run by a coordinator: Education Research Division, Educational Support Division, and Professional Development Division.
