David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies was created in 1984. Previously it was the Center for International and Area Studies. In 1984 the Center had the following programs: American Studies (Neil L. York, Coordinator); Asian Studies (Larry V. Shumway, Coordinator); Canadian Studies (Earl H. Fry, Coordinator); European Studies (Douglas F. Tobler, Coordinator); International Relations (Ray C. Hillam, Coordinator); Latin American Studies (Berkley A. Spencer, Coordinator); Near Eastern Studies (David C. Montgomery, Coordinator). In 1985 International Political Economy (Ray C. Hillam, Coordinator) was added. In 1986 International Political Economy was removed. International Internships was an added program in 1986.

Functions

To provide programs designed to create greater sensitivity and understanding of the world in which we live. These programs meet the needs of those students interested in liberal education as well as those interested in international careers in business, law governments, and international institutions.

To offer courses to prepare the student for an international career with business, government, humanitarian agencies, military or civilian intelligence, education, or a variety of other careers that may require international travel, residence, or expertise.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies was administered jointly by the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences and the College of Humanities. Each program had its own coordinator. The coordinators for the different programs were under the direction of the Dean of the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences.
