n 1909, Brigham Young University renamed and refocused the mission of  its College.  The Church Teachers College absorbed all of the Colleges departments but centered their energies into thoroughly preparing collegiate students to become high school educators. The Department of Psychology and Philosophy offered courses on those subjects, together with Ethics. In 1916, the department was discontinued for two years.  Then in 1918, the department was reorganized and named the Department of Psychology.

In 1916, the Department of Psychology and Philosophy was dissolved within Brigham Young University's Church Teachers College. Two years later, this department was resurrected and renamed the Department of Psychology. When the Church Teachers College split in 1920, the Department of Psychology retained its name under the newly organized School of Arts and Sciences.
