In 1910, under the Church Teachers College, the Department of Foreign Languages split into two new departments, Ancient Languages and Modern Languages. Then, in 1916 the two departments rejoined to once again form the Department of Foreign Languages. After the Church Teachers College split in 1920, the Department of Foreign Languages retained its name under the newly organized School of Arts and Sciences.
